COSMETIC TATTOO AFTERCARE

Caring for your new SMPU BROWS

Please follow the recommended aftercare instructions below for optimum healing and care for your new cosmetic tattoo brows.

My job finishes when you leave the studio, so it is important to know your job on how to look after your brows post treatment.

PLEASE: Always wash your hands before touching your brows!

After your tattoo session:
When your tattoo session is finished, the technician will lightly coat your tattoo with a layer of cocobutter/A+D Ointment. This will prevent the tattoo from exposure to contamination from foreign objects and avoid any air-borne infections. Your new tattoo is still a wound and open flesh is a breeding ground for bacteria and infection, therefore you must leave the ointment skin for 2 hours after your tattoo session and avoid touching your Brows.

What to remember:

  • Your skin may be swollen and hot to touch - this is completely normal and a sign healing is taking place.

  • Swelling can slightly alter the shape of the brows, it can take up to 6 hours for the swelling to settle.

  • THE COLOUR IS 50% DARKER FOR FRESH BROWS!! Please don't panic! It can take 4-7 DAYS for the colour to settle and 4-6 WEEKS for the true colour to come through.

  • During the first 4-6 weeks of healing sometimes the colour may appear faded, this is due to colour being obscured by the devleoping layers of new skin.

  • You must wait until the 4-6 weeks before making any final judgemnets or undertaking any further treatment.

.

The evening after your treatment:
Ensure for the first evening of getting your new tattoo that you are able to rest and prepare for your tattoo aftercare needs. It is advisable that you have a relaxing evening and try to avoid alcohol (no wild partying!). The body has experienced 'trauma' to the skin and the more relaxing and gentle the evening the quicker you will heal with much better results.

Avoid any excessive physical exercise for the first couple of days as it may cause the skin to take longer to heal due to all the sweating.

Do not cover the treated area with clingfilm. If they are still a little swollen/hot you can place a damp wet facecloth for soothing.

Daily aftercare routine for 4-6 weeks post treatment:

Cleaning your brows:
Always clean your hands prior to applying the balm.

Apply a thin layer of balm 4 times a day (more if the area is very dry) and use a clean cotton bud for application to prevent contamination.

Avoid water near the brows. Water drys out the skin and may cause your healing brows to scab.

Use a gentle facial cleanser when washing your face (I recommend the brand Simlpe face wash) and try to avoid rubbing the brow area.

If the area is wet, or after washing, just pat the brows gently dry - no rubbing!

Keep hair away to prevent infection.

What you can't do::

Itching is completely normal, this is a good sign of healing. DO NOT PICK SCRATCH OR PEEL the treated area. This can result in scabbing and the colour healing unevenly. You can also risk scarring and infection - allow the wound to flake on it's own.

DO NOT apply make up until 72 hours after the treatment.

Do  not expose the area to extreme heat - hot baths/jacuzzi's/tanning beds/direct sunlight/saunas/ salt water/chlorinated pools - this will fade your tattoo and increas risk of infection.

Do not apply any other ointment onto your tattoo - only the one specified by your technician (the supplied balm or Palmers Coco Butter). NEVER use Vaseline, Bepanthen or Savlon!

Long Term care post Touch-up Treatment:
Remember - cosmetic tattoo treatment is a low maintenance care routine, not a NO maintenance care routine!

  • To keep your brows looking their very best it may be necessary to have a maintenance top up every 12-24 months. The time for the top up varies for each individual and many factors can determine how quick brows may start to fade (age/skin care routine/smoking/alcohol intake/sun damage/medication/diet/oily or dry skin/etc.).  Contact your technician for advice or to book a refresh appointment.

  • Avoid exposure to the sun! This fades colour very quickly. Apply a sunscreen ideally SPF50.

  • Avoid moisturisers that contain Salycic or Glycolic Acid or BHA's/AHA's and these promote skin regeneration - if you use these just avoid the brow area.

  • If you are planning an MRI scan or chemical peel please inform your practioner that you have had cosmetic tattoo treatment.

  • If your are planning on giving blood please inform the nurse as you may not be able to gove blood 6 months post proceedure.

  • If you are planning any Botox, Laser Hair Removal or Cosmetic surgery, please remember these proceedures can alter the shape/shade of your brows and to inform the technician.

Lastly:
Just to repeat, my job finishes when you leave the studio and it is your job
is to look after your tattoo. If you stick to the above advice you should have no trouble with the healing of your tattoo. Your tattoo will heal within 4-6 weeks, but remember everyone is different and heals differently; you know your body best!
